Who is DJ Alewife?
By day: a Certified Cicerone® and BJCP Certified Beer Judge who takes tasting notes seriously enough to have been examined on them. By night: pink hair, a disco ball, and a pint of something hazy on the mixer.
An alewife is the woman who brewed the beer long before brewing became an industry. This is the same job, with a crossfader.
The format
Each stream is a theme, a two-hour live mix, and three beers pulled apart on air — aroma, malt, hops, finish, and what to play while you drink them. Requests welcome, pretension not.
FAQ
- What's your favorite beer?
- My favorite beer, what a complex question. I think a Belgian saison is the most diverse beer in that it can be paired with just about any food. That's magical. But on a daily basis, you'll more often find me drinking West Coast IPA.
- How did you get into beer judging?
- I helped my dad with brew days back in the 90s. He homebrewed to save money, ha! When I became a drinking adult, I learned to homebrew, joined a club, started judging beer and the rest is history.
- Do you get paid to judge beer?! How cool!
- No. It's volunteer work. Seriously.
